Match your setup to the technique you’ll use to present the lure, as well as the target species and their size. As a solid all-round vertical setup from a boat, go for a casting or spinning rod in the 140–185 cm range with a casting weight of 30–200 g – perfect for waters up to around 20 m depth. When fishing deeper, especially at sea, step up your gear: choose tackle that handles heavier rigs and a rod with enough backbone to keep full control over your lure presentation. Pair it with a 4000/5000 size spinning reel or a size 301 baitcaster, spooled with braided line 0.17–0.25 mm. Add a fluorocarbon leader of 0.80 mm or 1.20 mm – a safe choice for pike. Alternatively, a tungsten or steel leader will also do the job.
